    Biological fouling (or biofouling) refers to the accumulation of calcareous sealife (i.e. barnacles, molluscs, encrusted bryozoans, etc.) onto ship hulls and other submerged structures.  This organic colonization causes structural and material deterioration to wood vessels and the scabrous nature of cumulative biofoul causes increased drag consequently requiring a vessel to produce more energy. As a result, biofouling was a pervasive menace for early marine industries.
    In the 18th century, copper (specifically copper ions carrying a double positive charge: Cu^+2) was found to be a deterrent of most categories of biofouling and organic colonization as a result of its natural toxicity to marine life, specifically invertebrates and parasites. Ship hulls were masked in thin copper sheathing beneath the water line in a process that proved to be as effective as it was costly. Consequently this practice could only be adopted on a limited basis, often by large governmental navys and among private commercial ships contingent on individual financial abilities.  
    In 1863, Augustus H. Wonson and James G. Tarr developed the first copper sulfate-based ship bottom paint as a practical and economical replacement for copper sheathing. The solution consisted of Stockholm tar combined with benzine or naphtha, which was allowed to separate over a period of twenty-four hours. The resulting liquid product mixture was then combined with “the oxide of copper made from pyritous friable ores,” preferred over standard industrial “scale copper” for its ability to decelerate the dissolution of the copper mixture and therefore extend the effective lifespan and durability of the paint. A commercial ship weighing one hundred tons could protect its entire hull with a mere seven gallons of the new concoction.
    That same year Wonson and Tarr established their company and constructed a small factory complex to produce the copper-sulfide paint in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The complex was sited at the mouth of the port town’s inner harbor, on the North East corner of a peninsula known as Rocky Neck. The complex consisted of a granite pier supporting several wood and brick-construction buildings that served administrative, mechanical, and logistical purposes. Shipment of the final product mixture by boat was made through the site’s immediately accessible harbor docks. The most prominent building of the complex, the production building, was used to house the multiple thousand-gallon vats within which the proprietary chemical processes took place, as well as to store the prepared products for shipment.
    Most of the original complex, including the production building, still stands today and is occupied by The Ocean Alliance, a marine biology research facility focused on tracking the health of migratory whale populations. Though marked as a historical landmark and provided with financing for rehabilitation from local governments, the production building’s restoration is hampered by the toxic chemicals that saturate its wood structure. Residue from both the paint manufacturing spoil and mold-preventative chemicals integrated into the original red exterior paint that covers the building have meant that alterations may lead to dangerous pollutants affecting local marine habitats.
    The complex is also threatened by prospective ocean level rise due to the effects of climate change. It is predicted that within the next one hundred years median ocean levels will rise well above the first floor level of the complex. Soon, without substantial engineering or perhaps outright relocation, the structure itself will be subsumed by the ocean and exposed to the very organic colonization it was built to systematically fend off.
    The complex and its prominent production building have become a precarious monument to the Gloucester community, acting as a signifier of both the flourishing fishing industry that supported the port town for four-hundred years and the conundrum presented to its historical relics in the face of drastic environmental change: the past, too, must transform to meet the future.
    This quarter-mile stretch of rocky coast where the Wonson and Tarr facility is located is also documented as the point where French explorer Samuel de Champlain first landed and made contact with local indigenous populations in 1606. Based on Champlain’s own records, the interaction was limited, but included engaging with local community leaders about the condition of the surrounding terrain.
